Editorial Standards
Editorial Policy
At StateCalc, every calculator, data point, and piece of financial content goes through a structured editorial process before publication.
Our Commitment to Accuracy
As a financial information resource, we hold ourselves to high standards of accuracy. Our calculators are used by homebuyers, investors, taxpayers, and business owners making real financial decisions. We take that responsibility seriously.
Our Editorial Process
Every calculator and piece of content on StateCalc follows a structured workflow:
1. Data Collection & Verification
We source all financial data from authoritative government and institutional sources: the IRS, U.S. Census Bureau, HUD Fair Market Rents, Tax Foundation, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and individual state revenue departments. Each data point is cross-referenced against at least two independent sources when available.
2. Formula Development & Testing
All calculator formulas use standard financial mathematics (time value of money, amortization schedules, marginal tax brackets, etc.). Every formula is backed by an automated test suite — currently 226 unit tests — that validates calculations against known correct values.
3. Quality Review
Before publication, each calculator is tested for edge cases, cross-checked against published examples from government sources, and reviewed for usability. We verify that the methodology is sound and results are consistent with published data.
4. Ongoing Monitoring
We schedule regular data refreshes to capture annual rate changes (minimum wage, tax brackets, property tax assessments, FMR values). When we update data, we re-run the full test suite and update the "Last Updated" timestamp on each affected calculator.
Data Sources We Trust
Our calculators draw from these authoritative sources:
- Internal Revenue Service (IRS) — Federal tax brackets, FICA rates, standard deductions
- U.S. Census Bureau — Median household incomes, median home values by state
- HUD / Fair Market Rents — Section 8 FMR values for all 50 states
- Tax Foundation — State income tax rates, sales tax rates, property tax data
- Bureau of Labor Statistics — Consumer Price Index, cost-of-living data, employment statistics
- Federal Reserve (FRED) — Interest rates, mortgage rates, economic indicators
- State Revenue Departments — Individual state tax rates, filing thresholds, LLC fees
- Department of Labor — Federal and state minimum wage rates, overtime rules
Corrections Policy
If we discover an error in our data or calculations — whether found internally or reported by a user — we correct it immediately, re-run our test suite, and update the "Last Updated" date on affected pages. For material corrections, we note the change at the bottom of the calculator page.
Found an error? Please contact us and we'll investigate within 24 hours.
