Enter the side income, expenses and your day-job pay to see each tax and the quarterly payment; pick your state to fill in the rate its own tax puts on that income. Only the state line changes from state to state, and in 9 states it is zero.

How this calculator works
Net side income is what you earn minus business expenses. Self-employment tax is 15.3% (12.4% Social Security, 2.9% Medicare) on 92.35% of net earnings once they pass $400. The extra federal income tax is the difference between tax on your day job plus the side income and tax on the day job alone, so the side income is taxed at the brackets it actually lands in, after the deduction for half of the self-employment tax. The qualified business income deduction (up to 20% of the side profit, 26 U.S.C. 199A) is left out, so for most filers who qualify the federal figure is higher than what they will owe. State tax is the rate you enter times the net side income; the state picker fills in the rate each state's own brackets or flat rate produce for the example incomes, which is how this site's state calculators computed it. The quarterly payment is the total divided by four.

State income tax on $12,000 of net side income
Computed with the calculator above for a single filer with a $55,000 day job, $15,000 of side income and $3,000 of expenses: the state's tax on both incomes minus its tax on the day job alone, from the brackets or flat rate this site uses for each state. Self-employment and federal tax are the same in every state ($1,696 and $1,338 here).

Frequently Asked Questions
How much tax do I pay on side hustle income?
For $15,000 of side income with $3,000 of expenses on top of a $55,000 single filer's day job, the calculator gives $1,696 of self-employment tax and $1,338 of extra federal income tax before any state tax. The state adds from nothing in 9 states to $1,050 in Oregon, per the table below.
Do I need to make quarterly estimated payments?
The IRS expects estimated payments when you will owe $1,000 or more for the year after withholding; the usual due dates are April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15. Raising the withholding at your day job is another way to cover the side income. States with an income tax have their own estimated-payment rules.
