Child Support Calculator: Planning Estimate
Enter both parents' incomes, the children, overnights and the yearly costs for a planning figure for monthly child support. Courts use each state's own guideline instead: 41 states pool both incomes (income shares), 6 take a percentage of the paying parent's income and 3 use the Melson formula. The table names your state's model and links its official guideline or calculator.

How this calculator works
The calculator is a planning heuristic, not any state's guideline: 17% of the two parents' combined gross income for one child, 5 percentage points more for each further child up to five, plus the yearly child care and children's health insurance you enter, split between the parents by income share. The parent with fewer overnights is treated as the payer of their share. It does not compute net income, state schedules, self-support reserves, parenting-time formulas, credits for other children, who actually pays a cost, or deviations, so its result is a starting point for planning, not an order.

Income shares: Both parents' incomes are combined, a state schedule gives the share of that income the children would have received had the parents lived together, and each parent owes their income share of it. Percentage of income (Alaska, Mississippi, Nevada, North Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin): A percentage of the paying parent's income, set by the number of children; the other parent's income does not enter the base amount. Melson (Delaware, Hawaii and Montana): Each parent first keeps a self-support amount, the children's primary needs are funded from what is left, and a further share of remaining income is added for the children's standard of living. Each state defines the income it counts: California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Texas, for example, start from net income, not the gross income this calculator uses. Frequently Asked Questions
How is child support calculated?
Under each state's own guideline. 41 states use an income shares model, 6 (Alaska, Mississippi, Nevada, North Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin) a percentage of the paying parent's income, and 3 (Delaware, Hawaii and Montana) the Melson formula; each adds its own rules for income, parenting time, child care and health costs. This calculator uses one planning heuristic for all of them: with $60,000 and $40,000 incomes, 2 children, $5,000 of child care and $3,600 of children's insurance, and Parent 1 with 219 overnights, it gives $1,020 a month from Parent 2.
How much does child support change with the number of children?
In this heuristic the child budget is 17% of combined income for one child and 5 points more for each further child, so the same family's planning amount moves from $853 a month with one child to $1,020 with two. State schedules rise by different steps and often depend on income level, so check the official calculator in the table.
Where can I get an official child support amount?
From the court or child support agency in the state that issues or will issue the order. The table below links each state's guideline, statute or official calculator; a court can still deviate from the guideline amount under that state's rules.
