Maryland Capital Gains Tax Calculator
Maryland taxes capital gains as ordinary income at graduated rates up to 6.5%. Estimate federal + state tax.
Maryland taxes capital gains at its regular state rates of 2% to 6.5% plus county tax, and when federal adjusted gross income is over $350,000 it adds 2% of the net capital gain (Md. Code, Tax-General § 10-105(a)(3)-(4)).
| Rule | Maryland |
|---|---|
| Rate | State brackets of § 10-105(a): 2% up to 4.75% on most income, rising to 6.5% above $1,000,000 for a single filer ($1,200,000 joint). |
| Extra 2% | § 10-105(a)(3): an additional 2% of net capital gain, only when federal AGI exceeds $350,000 (§ 10-105(a)(4)). |
| Exempt from the 2% | A primary residence sold for under $1,500,000; assets in 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), IRA, Roth IRA and similar plans; certain livestock, easement land, § 179 business property and nonprofit affordable housing. |
| Local tax | County income tax applies on top of the state rate and is not modeled here. |

How This Calculator Works
Calculation methodology and assumptions
The Maryland line is the modeled gain times the 6.5% in the Modeled State Rate field, added to the federal estimate.
Estimate only — these are not official figures
State tax is not a return calculation: the 6.5% default is applied flat to the whole gain, so the brackets, thresholds and exclusions in the Maryland table above are not computed.
Do not rely on these amounts for budgeting or payment. For exact amounts, check the Maryland tax authority (https://www.marylandcomptroller.gov/individuals/).
Key State Information
Maryland's 2% capital-gain addition is aimed at high incomes: it applies only above $350,000 of federal AGI, and a home under $1.5 million is carved out. For most sellers the gain is simply taxed at the regular state rate plus the county rate.
Example Calculation
A married couple in Bethesda with $280,000 of other taxable income sells a brokerage position bought six years ago for $250,000 at $610,000, which lifts federal AGI past $350,000.
Entered as $250,000 basis, $610,000 proceeds, married filing jointly, $280,000 of other income: the calculator finds a $360,000 long-term (72 months) gain, $55,315 of regular federal tax plus $13,680 of net investment income tax, and $23,400 of Maryland tax at the 6.5% default.
Result: $92,395 in total (25.67% of the gain), leaving $517,605. Federal AGI is well over $350,000 here, so Tax-General § 10-105 adds 2% of the $360,000 net capital gain, $7,200, which the default rate does not show; county tax also comes on top.
