Missouri Capital Gains Tax Calculator
Missouri has exempted individuals' capital gains from state income tax since tax year 2025, so only federal tax applies. Estimate federal + state tax.
Missouri does not tax individuals' capital gains: for tax years from January 1, 2025, Mo. Rev. Stat. § 143.121.3(14)(a) subtracts 100% of income reported as a capital gain on the federal return.
| Rule | Missouri |
|---|---|
| Rate | 0% for individuals: the whole federal capital gain is subtracted. |
| Short- vs long-term | Both are subtracted; the statute covers "all income reported as a capital gain for federal income tax purposes". |
| Who | Individuals taxed under § 143.011. The same subtraction for entities starts only after the top individual rate falls to 4.5% or below (§ 143.121.3(14)(b)). |
| Tax year | Every tax year beginning on or after January 1, 2025, including 2026. |

How This Calculator Works
Calculation methodology and assumptions
The Missouri line is the modeled gain times the 0% in the Modeled State Rate field, added to the federal estimate.
Estimate only — these are not official figures
State tax is not a return calculation: Missouri exempts 100% of individual capital gain from state income tax for tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2025 (Mo. Rev. Stat. §143.121.3(14)(a)), so this calculator uses a 0% state default for individuals. A separate, not-yet-triggered provision (§143.121.3(14)(b)) extends the same 100% subtraction to entities once Missouri's top individual rate falls to 4.5% or below. This tool does not model entity-level filers or Missouri's farmland-sale subtraction under a different subsection.
Do not rely on these amounts for budgeting or payment. For exact amounts, check the Missouri tax authority (https://dor.mo.gov/taxation/individual/tax-types/income/).
Key State Information
Missouri went from taxing gains as ordinary income to exempting them entirely in 2025. Short-term gains count too, because the subtraction follows what the federal return reports as capital gain.
Example Calculation
A married couple in Springfield with $102,000 of other taxable income sells a lake-house lot after nine months for $225,000, $85,000 more than they paid.
Entered as $140,000 basis, $225,000 proceeds, married filing jointly, $102,000 of other income: the calculator finds a $85,000 short-term (9 months) gain, $18,700 of regular federal tax, and $0 of Missouri tax at the 0% default.
Result: $18,700 in total (22% of the gain), leaving $206,300. Missouri's 100% subtraction covers even this nine-month gain, so the state line is $0 and only federal tax is due.
