Capital Gains Tax Calculators Virginia

Virginia Capital Gains Tax Calculator

Virginia taxes capital gains as ordinary income at graduated rates up to 5.75%. Estimate federal + state tax.

Virginia taxes capital gains as part of taxable income at 2%, 3%, 5% and 5.75%, the top rate starting at just $17,000 (Va. Code § 58.1-320), so nearly every gain is taxed at 5.75%. The only capital-gain subtraction is for long-term gain on certain small Virginia technology investments made from 2010 to mid-2020.

How This Calculator Works

Calculation methodology and assumptions

The Virginia line is the modeled gain times the 5.75% in the Modeled State Rate field, added to the federal estimate.

How the federal tax is estimated (the same in every state)

Estimate only — these are not official figures

State tax is not a return calculation: the 5.75% default is applied flat to the whole gain, so the brackets, thresholds and exclusions in the Virginia table above are not computed.

Do not rely on these amounts for budgeting or payment. For exact amounts, check the Virginia tax authority (https://www.tax.virginia.gov/individuals).

Key State Information

Because the 5.75% bracket starts at $17,000, the calculator's 5.75% default is close to the true marginal rate for almost any Virginia seller. The qualified-business subtraction no longer applies to new investments: it covers only investments made by June 30, 2020, and not one claimed for the related tax credit.

Example Calculation

A head of household in Richmond with $62,000 of other taxable income sells employer stock received for $9,000 three years ago for $34,000.

Entered as $9,000 basis, $34,000 proceeds, head of household, $62,000 of other income: the calculator finds a $25,000 long-term (40 months) gain, $3,120 of regular federal tax, and $1,438 of Virginia tax at the 5.75% default.

Result: $4,558 in total (18.23% of the gain), leaving $29,443. All of this gain sits above Virginia's $17,000 threshold, so 5.75% is the real marginal rate on it: $25,000 x 5.75% = $1,437.50.
