How This Calculator Works

Calculation methodology and assumptions

Inheritance tax estimation for Rhode Island. Rhode Island does not impose a state inheritance tax. This calculator helps estimate potential taxes if assets come from a state that does levy inheritance tax, or to compare scenarios. Note that inheritance tax is different from estate tax — inheritance tax is paid by the recipient, while estate tax is paid by the estate before distribution. Federal estate tax applies to estates exceeding $15 million (2026) and is separate from state inheritance tax.

Example Calculation

Let's calculate inheritance tax on a bequest in Rhode Island.

A daughter inherits $200,000 from a parent in Pennsylvania. As a lineal descendant, she owes PA's 4.5% direct-descendant rate: $9,000. If the same $200,000 instead passed to the parent's sibling, PA's sibling rate of 12% would apply ($24,000). If it passed to an unrelated friend or a niece/nephew (PA has no separate niece/nephew class — they're taxed at the "other" rate), PA's 15% rate would apply ($30,000). In New Jersey, by contrast, children and other Class A relatives owe $0, but siblings (Class C) get only a $25,000 exemption before facing 11-16%, and unrelated beneficiaries (Class D) face 15-16% with no per-beneficiary exemption at all.

Result: Tax liability varies dramatically by relationship AND by state — the same relationship can be fully exempt in one inheritance-tax state and taxed in another (e.g., siblings are exempt in Kentucky and Maryland, but taxed in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Nebraska). Estate planning can minimize inheritance taxes through trusts, life insurance (proceeds are generally exempt), and gifting strategies during the decedent's lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Rhode Island have an inheritance tax?

No, Rhode Island does not have a state inheritance tax. Only 5 states currently levy inheritance tax: Kentucky, Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. However, if you inherit assets from someone who lived in one of those states, you may still owe that state's inheritance tax regardless of where you live.

What is the difference between inheritance tax and estate tax?

Inheritance tax is paid by the person receiving the inheritance, and rates often depend on the relationship to the deceased. Estate tax is paid by the estate before assets are distributed, regardless of who inherits. Rhode Island has neither inheritance tax nor estate tax. The federal estate tax applies to estates over $15 million (2026 exemption).
