Estimate only — these are not official figures

This planning tool does not implement the state guideline. It applies the same generic gross-income heuristic in every state: 17% of combined entered income for one child, plus 5 percentage points per additional child through five; adds the entered child-care and children’s health-insurance amounts; and allocates that modeled total by each parent’s gross-income share. Overnights only identify the scenario’s modeled payer (the parent with fewer overnights); there is no invented linear custody adjustment. It does not calculate taxes or net/disposable income, state schedules, income definitions or caps, self-support reserves, other-child credits, who paid an added expense, shared/split-custody formulas, deviations, or a legally determined obligor. The Income Shares label is sourced framework context, not a claim that the framework is encoded.

Do not rely on these amounts for budgeting or payment. For exact amounts, check the Colorado Child Support Services: https://childsupport.state.co.us/.

How This Calculator Works

Calculation methodology and assumptions

Every numeric support output is therefore modeled or derived; none is an official guideline amount.

Key State Information

Colorado's guideline is classified as Income Shares. That classification is context only and does not change this site's generic formula. Income Shares guidelines require state-specific income definitions, schedules, credits and adjustments that this tool does not encode. The prefilled Parent 1 income is the statewide median household-income figure, not either parent's presumed income.

Example Calculation

How is child support calculated in Colorado?

For two parents with monthly incomes of $5,000 and $3,000 and two children: In an income shares model, the combined income of $8,000 is looked up in the state's schedule to determine total child support obligation (e.g., $1,400/month). Each parent's share is proportional to their income — the higher earner pays 62.5% ($875) and the lower earner pays 37.5% ($525). The non-custodial parent typically pays their share to the custodial parent. (Note: the income figure each state's schedule actually uses may be net income rather than gross — see the income-basis note above.)

Result: Child support obligations vary dramatically by state. For this same scenario, obligations might range from $600/month in some states to $1,200+/month in others. Always use state-specific guidelines for accurate estimates.
