How This Calculator Works
Calculation methodology and assumptions
This calculator follows the official SNAP benefit sequence in 7 CFR §273.10 using USDA's published FY2027 (Oct 1, 2026 – Sep 30, 2027) figures. Here is what actually happens to your numbers: first, 20% of your earned income is deducted — SNAP does not count all of what you earn. Then the standard deduction for your household size comes off, plus dependent care costs and, for households with a member aged 60 or older or disabled, medical expenses above $35 a month. What remains is your adjusted income. Next, if your rent and utilities exceed half of that adjusted income, the excess is deducted too — capped for most households, but UNCAPPED if someone in the home is 60+ or disabled. The result is your net income, and SNAP assumes you can spend 30% of it on food. Your benefit is the maximum allotment for your household size minus that 30%, rounded down. Texas has adopted Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility (BBCE) and raised its gross income limit to 165% of the federal poverty level — well above the federal 130% floor — so households that would be denied in a non-BBCE state can still qualify here. Texas still applies an asset limit of $5,000. A Texas household of 4 with no income would receive the full maximum allotment of $1,023 per month. Utilities: the utility line starts at Texas's Standard Utility Allowance for heating and cooling, $464 (Texas Works Handbook C-120, Revision 26-4 (effective Oct. 1, 2026)), which replaces actual bills when the household pays heating or cooling separately. We do not model state-option child support deductions, state-funded supplements, or vehicle/asset valuation. Federal rules allow states to round intermediate figures differently, so an agency result may differ by about a dollar. This is an estimate to help you plan, not an eligibility decision — only Texas's SNAP agency can determine that.
Key State Information
Example: 3 people, $2,000 earned, $1,000 rent and the $464 utility allowance: about $623 a month. Smaller amounts apply to a household paying other utilities but no heating or cooling, $417 (limited allowance); paying only a phone bill, $64. Maximum monthly allotments in Texas for FY2027 (Oct 1, 2026 – Sep 30, 2027): $306 for 1 person, $562 for 2, $808 for 3, and $1023 for a household of 4. The minimum benefit for eligible 1–2 person households is $25. Note: Texas applies a $5,000 asset limit and excludes one vehicle up to $22,000, counting any excess vehicle value toward assets.

Our editorial standardsFrequently Asked Questions
How much food stamps will I get in Texas?
It depends on your household size, income, and housing costs. The maximum for a household of 4 in Texas is $1,023 a month (USDA FY2027 (Oct 1, 2026 – Sep 30, 2027)), and you receive that full amount only with no countable income. The worked example under Key State Information uses the $464 utility allowance; enter your own numbers above, since the deductions matter a great deal.
What is the income limit for food stamps in Texas?
Texas's gross monthly income limit is 165% of the federal poverty level — about $3,757 for a household of 3. That is higher than the federal 130% floor because Texas adopted Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility, so you may qualify here even if you would be over the limit in a stricter state. Within that limit you are categorically eligible through BBCE, so the net income test (100% of poverty) does not apply, though net income still sets the benefit. Above it, a household with a member 60+ or disabled can qualify on the net test alone.
Does Texas have an asset limit for SNAP?
Texas still applies an asset limit of $5,000. Texas applies a $5,000 asset limit and excludes one vehicle up to $22,000, counting any excess vehicle value toward assets.
Why is my actual SNAP benefit different from this estimate?
Texas's utility allowance is the usual reason. The calculator counts $464, the Texas Works Handbook C-120, Revision 26-4 (effective Oct. 1, 2026). If your notice shows another amount, you pay no heating or cooling, or your rent covers every utility, change Monthly Utilities. Other reasons: state-option child support deductions, state-funded supplements, and rounding differences of about a dollar that federal rules permit.
Do I have to meet work requirements to get SNAP in Texas?
Possibly. Under the 2025 federal law (P.L. 119-21), able-bodied adults without dependents are generally subject to a time limit from age 18 through 65 unless an exception applies — for example being medically unfit, pregnant, caring for a dependent child under 14, or qualifying tribal status. That law removed the earlier exceptions for veterans, people experiencing homelessness, and former foster youth. Note that USDA's own general work-requirements webpage still displayed the older age 18–54 range as of August 2026 and stated it was being updated, so confirm your situation with Texas's SNAP agency directly.
