How This Calculator Works

Calculation methodology and assumptions

Your marginal tax rate is the rate on your last dollar earned. Your effective rate is total tax ÷ total income — always lower than marginal. State tax is computed using Arizona's actual tax brackets, both for the dollar amount owed and for the rate on the next dollar (the rate of the bracket that holds Arizona taxable income, plus any credit that phases out as income rises). Arizona uses a flat 2.5% rate; its effective rate stays below that wherever part of income is not taxed. For a single filer, Arizona's rates apply to gross income less Arizona's own allowance: Arizona subtracts its $15,750 standard deduction for a single filer (tax year 2025). For a married couple the calculator subtracts only the Arizona deduction you enter.

Example Calculation

How does Arizona's tax burden compare for a typical household?

Consider a household earning $85,000/year that owns a $423,000 home (Arizona's median) and spends about $30,000/year on taxable purchases. Federal income tax (2026 brackets) plus FICA comes to roughly $16,373. Arizona's flat 2.5% income tax adds about $1,731. Property tax at 0.48% adds $2,030/year, and sales tax at 5.6% on taxable spending adds roughly $1,680/year.

Result: Total estimated tax burden: approximately $21,814/year, or about 25.7% of gross income (21.3% from income taxes and FICA alone). The total effective tax rate varies dramatically by state — no-income-tax states can run 10+ percentage points lower than high-tax states at the same income, a difference worth thousands of dollars a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?

Your marginal rate is the tax percentage on your next dollar of income (your highest bracket). Your effective rate is total taxes paid divided by total income. For example, with $100,000 income and $18,000 in total taxes, your effective rate is 18%, even if your marginal bracket is 24%.

What are Arizona's income tax brackets?

Arizona has a flat tax rate of 2.5% on all taxable income.
