Every state's electricity estimate starts from the U.S. Energy Information Administration's 2024 average monthly grid consumption per residential customer (Form EIA-861, Table 5.A) and combines it with the May 2026 residential price from Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A. Natural-gas rates also come from EIA Natural Gas Monthly. Consumption and price use different release cycles; home-size/occupant scaling and gas usage are modeled. Electricity produced and consumed behind the meter, such as customer-sited solar, is not included in utility-reported grid consumption.
EIA had not yet published (or withheld) a current-month residential gas price for 5 states — California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, and New Mexico — at data-collection time, so those calculators use that state's most recent available EIA month instead of inventing a current figure, and label it as such. The other 45 states use the current-month EIA figure.
Water and internet/cable costs have no single authoritative nationwide source (rates are set utility-by-utility or municipality-by-municipality), so those two figures are modeled planning estimates, scaled to each state's general cost-of-living index — clearly labeled and fully editable, never presented as government-verified.

Are the electric and gas rates on this site real government data?
Yes. Electricity consumption, electricity rates, and natural gas rates are sourced directly from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) for all 50 states. Electricity consumption is the 2024 annual average grid consumption per residential customer; the electricity price is from May 2026. Behind-the-meter generation is excluded, while home-size/occupant scaling and natural-gas usage remain modeled. 5 states (California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, and New Mexico) currently show the most recent available EIA month rather than the latest month, because EIA had not yet published or had withheld that state's current-month figure — this is labeled on each calculator.
Are water and internet costs verified the same way as electricity and gas?
No. There is no single authoritative nationwide source for residential water/sewer or internet/cable rates — they vary by utility and municipality. Those two figures are modeled, cost-of-living-scaled starting points that you can edit to match your actual bill.
