How This Calculator Works
Calculation methodology and assumptions
Utah charges $51.00 a year to register a passenger vehicle not exceeding 14,000 lb — $44 registration plus a statutory $7 (Utah Code §41-1a-1206) — and just $6.00 for a title, one of the cheapest title fees in the country. The distinctive Utah rule is the uniform age-based fee under §59-2-405.1, charged IN LIEU OF the property tax most states levy on vehicles: $150 for a vehicle under 3 years old, $110 from 3 to under 6, $80 from 6 to under 9, $50 from 9 to under 12, and just $10 at 12 years and older. Because it is age-based rather than value-based, an expensive but older vehicle can be far cheaper to keep registered in Utah than in a value-tax state. Small statutory add-ons apply every year: $2.50 for driver education and $1.00 for uninsured-motorist identification. Hybrids owe $21.75 annually and plug-in hybrids $56.50. Two things we deliberately do not fill in: the standard plate fee, which §41-1a-1211 leaves to administrative rule rather than statute, and the sales-tax rate, which is a combined state-and-local figure varying by purchase location that we could not verify statewide. Utah does allow a trade-in deduction, but only for a documented, simultaneous vehicle-for-vehicle trade.
Key State Information
Utah registration is $51/year with a $6 title. Instead of a property tax, Utah charges a uniform age-based fee — $150 under 3 years falling to $10 at 12+ — so older vehicles get very cheap regardless of value. Hybrids add $21.75/year and plug-in hybrids $56.50. A trade-in reduces tax only on a simultaneous vehicle-for-vehicle trade.
How to Use This Vehicle Registration Calculator
- 1
Enter your vehicle details
Input the vehicle's year, make, and estimated value. Utah base registration fees on vehicle value, age, weight, or a combination of these factors.
- 2
Select vehicle type
Passenger cars, trucks, motorcycles, RVs, and electric vehicles each have different fee structures. EVs often have additional registration fees to compensate for lost gas tax revenue.
- 3
Indicate if this is a new registration
First-time registrations (new purchase or transfer from another state) typically include title transfer fees, plate fees, and sometimes sales/use tax that aren't charged on renewals.
- 4
Review the fee breakdown
The calculator shows base registration fee, title fee, plate fee, and any additional Utah-specific fees (emissions inspection, road use fees, county/local surcharges).
Example Calculation
Registering a $32,000 vehicle in Utah, using Utah's cited source-backed formula.
Utah charges $51 to register and $6 for the title. Tax on the purchase comes to $0. These values come from Utah's source-backed formula and cited government materials — not a national average — so your total differs from a neighbouring state's even for an identical vehicle.
Result: First-year total: about $211 on a $32,000 vehicle. After the first year, renewal runs about $205. Amounts that are set locally (county property tax, clerk fees, or local surcharges, depending on the state) are separate — enter yours in the calculator above for a complete figure.
What Affects Your Results
Tax, Title and License (TTL)
"Tax, title and license" — often shortened to TTL, or called "tax, tags and title" — is the bundle of charges due when you buy a vehicle, and it is what this calculator totals. In Utah on a $32,000 vehicle that breaks down as $0 in tax, $6 for the title, and $205 for registration, plates, and other first-year fees: $211 in total. Dealers quote TTL as one lump sum, which is why the number is hard to check — the breakdown above is computed from Utah's cited source-backed formula so you can verify each line separately.
Vehicle Value
States with ad valorem taxes charge based on current vehicle value (depreciating annually). A $40,000 new car pays significantly more than a $10,000 used car in value-based states.
Vehicle Age
Some states reduce fees on older vehicles. Antique/classic vehicle registrations (typically 25+ years old) often have reduced flat fees but may carry usage restrictions.
Vehicle Weight
Trucks and heavy vehicles pay more in many states. Weight-based fees fund road maintenance since heavier vehicles cause more wear. Commercial vehicles have separate, higher fee schedules.
Fuel Type
Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles face an extra annual fee in most states, replacing the fuel tax they do not pay. The amount is set per state and several index it to the gas tax, so it rises over time.
Local Surcharges
County and municipal charges are added to state registration fees in many areas. Utah may have additional emissions inspection fees, road use fees, or infrastructure surcharges that are set locally rather than statewide.
Tips for Utah Residents
- Most states require registration within 30-90 days of establishing residency or purchasing a vehicle. Check Utah's deadline to avoid late fees, which can double the cost.
- When moving between states, you may get credit for recently paid registration fees in your previous state. Ask at the DMV — this isn't always offered proactively.
- Electric and hybrid vehicles often face additional annual fees to offset the gasoline tax they don't pay. Budget for this ongoing cost.
- Some states offer multi-year registration (2 or 5 years) at a discount. If you plan to keep the vehicle, this saves both money and annual DMV trips.
- Military members may be exempt from registration in their stationed state if they maintain registration in their home state. Check SCRA (Servicemembers Civil Relief Act) protections.

Our editorial standardsFrequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to register a car in Utah?
$51.00 a year for a standard passenger vehicle, plus the uniform age-based fee — $150 if the vehicle is under 3 years old, $110 at 3 to under 6, $80 at 6 to under 9, $50 at 9 to under 12, and $10 at 12 or older. A title is $6.00, and small statutory add-ons total $3.50. Hybrids pay $21.75 more per year, plug-in hybrids $56.50.
Does Utah charge property tax on vehicles?
No. Utah replaces it with the uniform age-based fee under §59-2-405.1, charged in lieu of property tax. Because it depends on age rather than value, a 12-year-old luxury vehicle pays the same $10 as any other 12-year-old car — unlike states that tax a percentage of current value every year.
Does a trade-in reduce Utah vehicle sales tax?
Yes, but narrowly. Utah requires a documented, simultaneous vehicle-for-vehicle trade for the allowance to apply. Selling your old vehicle separately and then buying does not qualify.
