How This Calculator Works
Calculation methodology and assumptions
This calculator is exact for a noncommercial passenger vehicle registered in the City and County of Honolulu (Oahu); Hawaii, Maui, and Kauai set their own county weight-tax and registration amounts, so this page does not silently apply Oahu rates statewide. Honolulu's current Motor Vehicle Inquiry v106 fee engine was queried directly on August 15, 2026 across fourteen weights. It advances the entered net weight to the next 100-pound bracket, charges county weight tax at 7 cents per adjusted pound with a $12 minimum, and itemizes a $20 county registration fee, $10 highway-beautification fee, $5 initial plate, and $0.50 emblem. Hawaii's state layer adds $46 annual registration (HRS §249-31) and one non-marginal weight-tax rate to the full adjusted weight: 1.75 cents/lb through 4,000, 2 cents/lb through 7,000, 2.25 cents/lb through 10,000, then $300 flat (HRS §249-33). Honolulu DCS sets the title/ownership transfer fee at $10 and adds $50 if transfer is more than 30 days late. A dealer's General Excise Tax is imposed on the seller and may be embedded in the price; it is NOT added here as a buyer DMV fee. The 4% figure shown only for a new-resident/import branch is Hawaii use tax under HRS §238-2, administered separately by the Department of Taxation. Safety inspection is required for registration transactions but its third-party inspection charge is not a DMV fee and is excluded.
Key State Information
Default Oahu example: a new 3,500 lb gasoline passenger vehicle is taxed at 3,600 lb. County weight tax is $252.00, state weight tax is $63.00, and the complete initial registration/title/plate total is $406.50. The recurring annual renewal is $391.50. No dealer GET is added as a separate DMV tax.
How to Use This Vehicle Registration Calculator
- 1
Confirm the Honolulu scope
Use this calculator only for a noncommercial passenger vehicle registered in the City and County of Honolulu (Oahu). Hawaii, Maui, and Kauai counties set different county rates and are not inferred.
- 2
Enter net weight and transaction
Enter the vehicle net weight from its certificate and select original registration, annual renewal, ownership transfer, gift, or new-resident import. Honolulu advances net weight to the next 100-pound tax bracket.
- 3
Set fuel and any exemption
Choose standard fuel, battery electric, or alternative fuel, then select a qualifying military weight-tax or disabled-veteran state-registration exemption if applicable. For transfers, say whether renewal is also due and whether the title is over 30 days late.
- 4
Review each Honolulu fee line
The result itemizes county and state weight tax, state and county registration, beautification, emblem, title, initial plate, fuel surcharge, and late penalty. Dealer GET is not added as a DMV charge; potential new-resident use tax appears separately.
Example Calculation
Registering a new 3,500-pound gasoline passenger vehicle in the City and County of Honolulu (Oahu).
Honolulu's official engine advances the vehicle to a 3,600-pound taxable bracket. County weight tax is $252.00, state weight tax is $63.00, and the fixed registration, beautification, emblem, title, and initial-plate lines make up the remainder.
Result: Initial Honolulu total: $406.50. Annual renewal: $391.50. Dealer GET is not a separate DMV fee, and no other Hawaii county rate is inferred.
What Affects Your Results
Honolulu Tax, Title and License (TTL)
For the prefilled Oahu passenger vehicle, TTL is $406.50: $391.50 recurring registration, $10.00 title, and $5.00 initial plate. Dealer GET is not added as a separate DMV tax.
Net Weight
Honolulu advances the entered net weight to the next 100-pound bracket. The default 3,500-pound vehicle is taxed at 3,600 pounds.
County Scope
The 7-cent county weight-tax rate, $12 minimum, $20 county registration, and $10 beautification line are Honolulu/Oahu values. Other Hawaii counties set their own amounts.
Transaction
Original and new-resident registrations include the annual stack, $10 title, and $5 initial plate. A current-registration transfer starts at the $10 title fee; renewal and a $50 late penalty are added only when selected.
Fuel and Exemptions
EV or alternative-fuel selections add $50. A qualifying military selection waives weight taxes; a qualifying 100% disabled-veteran selection waives the $46 state registration fee.
Tips for Hawaii Residents
- Complete an Oahu ownership transfer within 30 days to avoid the separate $50 late-transfer penalty.
- A valid Hawaii safety inspection certificate is required for registration transactions, but the inspection-station charge is not included in this DMV total.
- Battery-electric owners can elect the $50 flat charge instead of the mileage-based road-usage calculation through June 30, 2028.
- Eligible Hawaii-resident active-duty, Guard, or Reserve members can apply to waive vehicle weight taxes for one vehicle; documentation is required.
- Use the official county office for Hawaii, Maui, or Kauai registrations — this calculator deliberately does not apply Honolulu rates to those counties.

Our editorial standardsFrequently Asked Questions
How much is vehicle registration in Honolulu?
It depends on net weight. Honolulu's current engine charges 7 cents per adjusted pound (minimum $12) plus Hawaii's state weight tax, $46 state registration, $20 county registration, $10 beautification, and a $0.50 emblem. A new 3,500 lb gasoline passenger vehicle uses a 3,600 lb taxable weight and costs $406.50 including the $10 title and $5 initial plate; annual renewal is $391.50.
Does Hawaii charge sales tax when I register a car?
No separate dealer sales tax is collected as a Honolulu DMV registration line. Hawaii General Excise Tax is imposed on the seller and can be embedded in a dealer's price. A vehicle imported by a new resident can instead owe 4% Hawaii use tax under HRS §238-2, administered by the Department of Taxation; select that branch to show it separately.
Why does the calculator add 100 pounds?
Honolulu's live official fee engine advances the entered net weight to the next 100-pound bracket. For example, 3,500 lb is assessed at 3,600 lb and 4,000 lb at 4,100 lb. The calculator reproduces that observed current behavior rather than rounding differently.
Are Hawaii registration fees the same on every island?
No. County councils set county weight-tax rates, minimums, and related county fees. This calculator is explicitly for the City and County of Honolulu (Oahu). It does not infer Honolulu's 7-cent rate for Hawaii, Maui, or Kauai counties.
