How This Calculator Works
Calculation methodology and assumptions
Colorado uses two different values for two different charges. Specific Ownership Tax (SOT) follows 85% of the ORIGINAL MSRP, even when you buy used; the Tax Class C rate falls from 2.1% in year one to a $3 floor from year ten. Sales/use tax instead follows the actual purchase price after a qualifying vehicle-for-vehicle trade-in. The verified state floor is 2.9%; city, county, and special-district rates vary by registration address, so the combined-rate field starts at 2.9% and remains editable rather than pretending a county alone determines the answer. Recurring registration also includes the statutory passenger weight fee, current FASTER Road Safety and Bridge Safety surcharges, age fee, $4 clerk fee, emissions-account fees, selected EV/PHEV fees, and the $29 Keep Colorado Wild Pass unless declined. A purchase adds the $7.20 title and an optional $40 lien filing; late registration adds $25 per month up to $100. Plate material and the annually adjusted Motorist Insurance ID fee remain excluded because no single current statewide amount was published in the retrievable sources.

Our editorial standardsFrequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to register a car in Colorado?
For the default new $35,000 MSRP / $35,000 purchase-price, 3,500 lb gasoline car, the state-only first-year floor is $1,738.75 with the $29 Wild Pass. That includes $1,015.00 state sales tax at 2.9%, $624.75 Specific Ownership Tax, $91.80 in registration fees and surcharges, and a $7.20 title. Add city, county, and special-district tax for your registration address and any plate or insurance-ID fee on the county invoice.
What is Colorado's Specific Ownership Tax?
Colorado's DMV describes it as a property tax for your vehicle. For most passenger vehicles the taxable value is 85% of the ORIGINAL MSRP — not what you paid — and the rate steps down by model year: 2.1%, 1.5%, 1.2%, 0.9%, then 0.45% from the fifth through ninth years with a $3 minimum, and $3.00 from the tenth. Buying used does not reduce SOT, but keeping the vehicle does.
Why does Colorado registration get so much cheaper on older cars?
Because Specific Ownership Tax collapses with age. A $35,000 MSRP vehicle owes about $625 in year one, roughly $134 by year five, and just $3.00 from year ten. The base, Road and Bridge Safety, age, clerk, emissions, and selected Wild Pass or fuel fees continue.
Can I decline the Keep Colorado Wild Pass?
Yes. Colorado assesses the current $29 pass with eligible vehicle registration, but C.R.S. §33-12-108 lets you decline it without affecting registration. Select “Decline” above to remove it from every projected renewal year.
Does a trade-in reduce Colorado vehicle sales tax?
Yes, when a licensed or registered vehicle is exchanged for another vehicle. Colorado DOR guidance excludes the qualifying trade-in's fair market value from taxable purchase price. It does not reduce Specific Ownership Tax, which still uses 85% of original MSRP.
