Iowa Unemployment Benefits Calculator
Estimate your Iowa unemployment benefits. Max weekly: $790 with dependents, $644 without. Max weeks: 16. Free calculator.
Estimate only — these are not official figures
The weekly benefit applies Iowa's exact statutory formula, cited in the methodology and sources, so it matches the law when the wages you enter are accurate. The page is still labeled an estimate because its monthly figure (the weekly amount times 4.33) is not an amount the state pays and only the state agency can decide whether you qualify. The maximum weekly benefit ($790 with dependents, $644 without) and duration (16 weeks) come from published sources.
Do not rely on these amounts for budgeting or payment. For exact amounts, check the Iowa state unemployment insurance agency (file there and use its official benefits estimator for your actual Weekly Benefit Amount determination).

How This Calculator Works
Calculation methodology and assumptions
Iowa divides your highest-paid quarter by a number that shrinks as your dependents grow (Iowa Code §96.3(4)(a)), and caps the result at a share of the statewide average weekly wage that Iowa Workforce Development resets each July. For new claims from the benefit week of 2026-07-05: 0 dependents: 1/23 of the quarter, $96-$644; 1 dependent: 1/22 of the quarter, $100-$668; 2 dependents: 1/21 of the quarter, $105-$692; 3 dependents: 1/20 of the quarter, $110-$729; 4 or more dependents: 1/19 of the quarter, $116-$790. The "dependent allowance" shown is the difference between your amount and the no-dependent amount. The minimums are not a separate floor: they are what the same fractions give at the lowest qualifying quarter, 3.5% of Iowa's 2025 average annual wage ($2,212.48), rounded down; this calculator therefore rounds every result down to a whole dollar and treats a smaller quarter as ineligible. The claim is capped at the lesser of one-third of base-period wages or 16 weeks of benefits (§96.3(5)(a)); the longer layoff-due-to-closure rule is not modeled. Iowa's other monetary tests (base-period wages of at least 1.25 times the high quarter, wages in a second quarter) are not checked here.
Key State Information
Iowa is one of the few states where dependents change the formula itself: with 4 or more the divisor drops from 23 to 19 and the cap rises from $644 to $790 (claims from 2026-07-05). Claims last at most 16 weeks, and a smaller base period shortens them: $9,000 in the best quarter and $18,000 in the year gives $391 a week but only $6,000 in total, one-third of the wages.
Example Calculation
Let's review the inputs that set unemployment benefits in Iowa.
Iowa uses its own benefit formula from state law rather than a general 50%-of-wage estimate. Enter the exact quarter/base-period wage and eligibility fields requested by the calculator; the required inputs differ by state and cannot be reconstructed safely from median household income.
Result: Published maximum weekly amount: $790 with dependents, $644 without. Current maximum duration: 16 weeks. These are ceilings, not a typical award; the calculator above applies Iowa's source-backed formula to your own wage history, and only the state agency determines eligibility.

Our editorial standardsFrequently Asked Questions
How much is unemployment in Iowa?
From $96 to $644 a week with no dependents, up to $790 with 4 or more, for claims from 2026-07-05. $13,000 in your best quarter gives $565 a week with no dependents and $684 with 4.
Who counts as a dependent for Iowa unemployment?
Anyone you could claim as a dependent on your Iowa income tax return, plus a spouse who earns $120 a week or less (Iowa Code §96.3(4)(b)). Counts above 4 do not raise the benefit further.
How long does Iowa unemployment last?
Up to 16 weeks. The total is the lesser of 16 times your weekly amount or one-third of your base-period wages (Iowa Code §96.3(5)(a)).
